Class 1

April 2010

Welcome back to our final school term for this year.

So much learning has taken place over the last two terms that all of us deserved a long rest over the Easter holidays, so I hope you all managed some free time to hunt for eggs, enjoy the sun and celebrate this fantastic time of year.

Our topics for the final term will be:-

People who help us: The children will explore who helps us in our community and finding out about local “heroes”. We shall develop an understanding of the ways people help us in our community.
Food: We shall be continuing to explore foods from different countries and building on last terms Barnaby Bear project. We shall be exploring world cuisine further in this topic.
Under the Sea: We shall explore sea creatures and habitats under the sea. We shall make sea creatures inside and outside and have some fun making large scale fish! We shall develop an understanding of the natural world through this topic.
Summer Days: the children will explore the sun and learn how to be “sun safe”. We shall also be continuing to harvest our flowers and crops from our garden. We shall be exploring seasonal change and recognising sun safety in this topic.
Holidays: We shall end our school year by exploring the topic of holidays. We shall look at globes and maps and plan imaginary holidays in this topic.

This term we are very lucky to be working with lots of different teaching assistants since Mrs Crowley left at the end of the term to await the arrival of her baby boy. We shall have a teaching assistant every morning to help us with literacy/CLL and numeracy/PSRN. Reception children will still have baking as usual with the assistance of Mrs Simpson on Thursday morning.

PE has now changed to an afternoon, therefore we no longer require parents to change their children in the morning on Wednesdays. Please make sure your child’s PE kit is in school by the end of the week, so we can plan our first outdoor PE session, weather permitting.

Year 1 children will have homework sent home every Friday and it is expected back by Wednesday the following week. Spelling for year 1 children will be tested on Fridays as usual, with the new spelling sent home on the same day. Year 1 children are concentrating on spelling high frequency words this term. Many of the Reception children, who are not already on them, will now be learning high frequency words instead of phonics sounds, as discussed at parents evening.

Finally, we are requesting yoghurt pots again, to plant seeds in for the summer term.

Please look at the gallery section of our website to see some fantastic pictures of the learning that has taken place in our class this term. You are all welcome to come to the classroom and look at our displays or the photographs on the decking wall. I look forward to seeing you.
