April 2010
Dear Parents/Carers
Welcome back to a busy Summer term anticipating some lovely, sunny weather.
Having enjoyed some fantastic learning opportunities last term which culminated with the installation of our Solar light tube in the Science room, we now look forward to a long Summer term full of activity!
Good wishes to all Year 6 pupils as they sit their final SATS assessment in May.
Once again we would like to give you a brief overview of the topics being studied this term and hope you will continue to support your child’s learning by sharing in their learning.
Sustainable Development Topics: These are the topics we shall be covering this term:
Heal the World;
A review of the environmental learning achieved throughout all the time in school. Identify an environmental project, complete and evaluate task.
Where in the World;
We will identify a contrasting locality and investigate our chosen country’s lifestyle; dress; food; religious practices and beliefs.
From here to there;
We investigate a range of different modes of travel. Children will make and test a variety of transport from here to there.
Fame
Children consider the lives of famous people in history and recently. They investigate and present the topic on their own favourite person.

We would welcome any resources on these topics you may have at home. If they are brought into school please make sure they are named. In addition we will be following the Primary Frameworks for the teaching of Numeracy and Literacy. To assist your child with their Numeracy work, please help them learn their times tables, as a speedy recall of these facts will assist them when learning more complex Numeracy strategies.
Reading; Please continue to encourage and supervise reading and note down when finished reading book in the reading record.
P.E. will be on Mondays and Fridays so full PE kit/plimsoles and trainers will need to be in school for these lessons. . Ideally PE kits need to be in school all week in case of a change of day.
Homework will be set weekly. This will comprise of a spelling/phonics activity, and either a Literacy or Numeracy activity. This will be sent home on Friday. Children will be expected to complete their homework and hand it in by Wednesday of the following week. Occasionally a piece of topic homework may be given.
Parent helpers If any parents/carers are available to help with reading and any other tasks in the classroom please let us know. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Please look at the gallery section of our website to see some fantastic pictures of the learning that has taken place in our class last term.
