Spring Newletter

January 2010
Dear Parents/Carers
Welcome back to all children, parents/carers of Class 4/5
Hoping that you have all enjoyed a festive Christmas break and are refreshed for the new spring term.
Just a little note to let you know the routine for Class 4 for this term.
Reading; Please continue to encourage and supervise reading and note down when finished reading book in the reading record.
P.E. will be on Mondays and Fridays so full PE kit/plimsoles and trainers will need to be in school for these lessons. As this is a cold term a tracksuit would be ideal for any outdoor activities. Ideally PE kits need to be in school all week in case of a change of day.
Sustainable Development Topics: These are the topics we shall be covering this term:
Gods and Heroes;
Investigate the ancient Greek theatre; Learn about the ancient Olympic Games;
Discover what similarities and differences there are between ancient Greek schools and our school.
A Place in a Space;
Investigate, through research, other places in the UK, Europe and further afield that share a similar physical environment; Design and construction of a framework-type shelter for an identified purpose
All Change;
Investigate whether a solid can be recovered from a solution by evaporation; Using careful observation can I describe a number of changes and identify whether some changes are reversible or not.
I Spy
Recognise that light travels from a source, that when it is blocked, a shadow is formed and when it hits a shiny surface, it is reflected; recognise that light sources are seen when light from them enters the eyes .
We would welcome any resources on these topics you may have at home. If they are brought into school please make sure they are named. In addition we will be following the Primary Frameworks for the teaching of Numeracy and Literacy. To assist your child with their Numeracy work, please help them learn their times tables, as a speedy recall of these facts will assist them when learning more complex Numeracy strategies.

Homework will be set weekly. This will comprise of a spelling/phonics activity, and either a Literacy or Numeracy activity. This will be sent home on Friday. Children will be expected to complete their homework and hand it in by Wednesday of the following week. Occasionally a piece of topic homework may be given.

Parent helpers If any parents/carers are available to help with reading and any other tasks in the classroom please let us know. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
